Al Jean: ‘We did them purely for the love of hearing ourselves talk.’
FOX has announced that seasonal DVD releases of The Simpsons are being discontinued.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “A distribution source close to the series confirmed seasons of The Simpsons will no longer be released on DVD now that nearly every episode of the animated sitcom is available online at the touch of a button. ”
Showrunner Al Jean confirmed it on Twitter last Wednesday. He stated: ‘We did them purely for the love of hearing ourselves talk.’
.@thesimpsons #EverySimpsonsEver I personally am v sorry to see DVDs discontinued We did them purely for the love of hearing ourselves talk

FOX wants to focus on Digital Platforms rather than DVDs, because the latter market is in a very bad situation.
@theRealiHeart Simpsons fans are great (which is why we will do commentaries anything else we can). DVD market is dying. Did best we could.

It is, however, is yet unknown if this decision will also affect Blu-Ray releases too. The extras and commentaries will all be available in Digital Platforms such FXNOW and SimpsonsWorld.com; but just for people inside the USA.
