In the episode, Derren Brown enters Springfield in a bid to raise the spirits of the residents. After using psychological tricks and showmanship, Homer inadvertently gets hypnotised and subsequently believes he is Santa Claus. This starts a “cheery chain-reaction and causes everyone to question what they believe and to explore the meaning of ‘miracle’”.

Derren said to Digital Spy, “It’s the best thing that’s happened in my life so far.  I had just started writing Only Human, my new touring show, when the call came in. I was asked to keep it very quiet for the time being, so I immediately told everyone I met. I did wonder if it meant I had reached a level of such stratospheric success that I no longer needed to write the new show, but I have been politely assured that is not the case. I’m not against stepping out on stage with bright yellow make-up.”

Carolyne Omine added: “In terms of lines and screen time it is probably one of the largest guest starring roles we’ve ever had and he is fantastic, charming and very funny in the episode.”

Micheal Price on Bluesky wrote: It’s the closest The Simpsons has ever come to doing a bottle episode. It’s not a “standing set”, (i.e., Moe‘s), and there’s several guest characters, but it mostly takes place on a jetliner, a la Con Air, Flightplan, Non-Stop.

As previously announced, the episode is based on Ray Bradbury‘s short stories.

The episode’s framing device is based on his book The Illustrated Man.

The episode starts with the family visiting a circus that popped out over the night in the city, and Homer and Bart watch the freaks, while Lisa has problems with this carnivals, already having three of them shut down that year. Contrary to the others, this exploits only humans, and she wanders around till she meets the Illustrated Man, and after gazing in his tatoos, she watches the stories that inspired them.

In the first, based on The Screaming Woman, Bart hears a scream from underground and goes in town to search for help but noone believes him.

In the second, based on Marionettes, Inc., Carl tells Chalmers that he can get a copy of himself as a robot so he can avoid being with Skinner, but Chalmers scrambles to put things right and the robot takes over his life.

The third and final one, based on Fahrenheit 451, Homer’s job is to eliminate “low-brow” entertainment things, with only tv series like Robber Barons (a Succession-like show) that leaves him confused, before discovering the illegal joys of watching America’s Funniest Home Videos and similar other programs, becoming addicted to what he must instead erase.
