Matt Selman talked to TVLine about the episode: “I wanted to avoid any of the Simpsons rapping, to be honest. I hope real hip-hop fans watch and recognize that we did our best and don’t think it’s lame.”
He also adds that it’s “not a hip-hop musical — more like an episode of Empire. We’re going to play up the crazy melodrama with revenge, betrayal and explosions. There’s an epic quality to it, in addition to it being very literary.”
In an interview with USA Today, Matt Selman says: “The episode feels a little different tonally. There’s more wall-to-wall music. It feels more like Empire.”
Keegan-Michael Key adds about Jazzy James. “He’s given a second chance to be the artist he was when he was younger. I’ve been watching The Simpsons since they were on The Tracey Ullman Show.”
Dan Greaney continues: “The idea was that the hip-hop artist and Mr. Burns would relate to each other around this idea of opulence and old-fashioned style, wealth and power. It turned out the hip-hop/Gatsby connection was a very rich vein.”
And concludes how hip-hop “is a major cultural phenomenon we’ve barely touched. For me, the starting point was wanting to do something that embraced black America more. The Simpsons is a little light on that.”

Matt Selman, one of the writers of the episode, in an interview with IndieWire said: “We had never done a hip-hop episode to this degree. It’s embracing the spirit of excess so commonly found in hip-hop lyrics. It’s a Mr. Burns episode. He learns the joy of living large and flashing the cash like a rap mogul.”
Speaking of Taraji P. Henson, Selman said, “She was super fearless and funny about making fun of Cookie. She gave us a Cookie-r version of Cookie. Her character bursts in like a fireball of chaos and mixes everything up. She was so fun and had tons of ad-libs. We’re putting in everything we could that she was saying.”
Talking about the other special guests, Snoop Dogg, RZA and Common, Selman said: “We knew we had a little extra time in the show, and we thought, who are the iconic figures that could be the Mount Rushmore of rap? Their parts aren’t huge but they’re along for the ride and they all lead up to the ultimate revenge rap.”
For the music, produced by Jim Beanz, music producer for “Empire,” several original rap songs were produced by him and Selman said: “He helped give the whole episode a more layered score than usual. It’s playful with singers and beats. If you’re doing an hour, you have to keep viewers’ energy up, and music is a great way to do that. He’s been sleeping in his studio to put together the sounds for this show. It’s really cool to watch.”

Entertainment Weekly has released the news: the great cast of the two-parter first ever one hour episode of the show expands. After announcing Taraji P. Henson (as Praline) and Keegan-Michael Key (as Jazzy James), three new special guest have been announced: Snoop Dogg, RZA and Common, all voicing themself!
Show producer, and one of the writers of the episode, Dan Greaney, told EW: “We wanted the Mt. Rushmore of rap, and we got it. They represent different moods and different aspects of the history of hip-hop.”
Executive Producer Matt Selman next told EW: “It’s a tale of greed, excess, betrayal, revenge, and ruthlessness, and there’s a hilarious goose in it. The goose is really funny.”

We previously reported about Wayne Gretzky appearing in “The Last Traction Hero” as a guest star, but it has been confirmed he’ll appear in the christmas episode “The Nightmare After Krustmas“, the 10th episode of season 28, scheduled to air December 11, 2016.
Al Jean, in an interview with the NHL site, says: “We reached out to him. We were looking for heroes of the winter like Santa Claus and Jack Frost, and there couldn’t be a bigger hockey hero than Wayne Gretzky.”

“People argue about a lot of things, but they never argue about who’s the greatest hockey player. It’s always him. I don’t think there is anybody better at anything that Gretzky is as a hockey player. He had a lot of great stories and it was a real pleasure to meet him.” Gretzky recorded his part in the summer.
Jean lived in Michigan and is a Detroit Red Wings fan. “We just did a list (of athletes on the show). [Gretzky is] one of my favorites. I would say the only one that rivals him in terms of success in their sport is the Williams sisters (Serena and Venus) in tennis, and Magic Johnson in the NBA.”
This is the first time a hockey player will guest star in the show. “We had to get permission, and his wife, Colleen, thought it was a great idea to use him in the show. Growing up a big Red Wings fan, there’s nobody bigger than Gordie.
Jean concludes: “My dad has had season tickets at Joe Louis Arena for pretty much the whole run of Joe Louis Arena. He got the tickets back when they weren’t a good team, and we saw the whole rise and Stanley Cups. When the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup for the first time in my life in 1997, that was one of one of the highlights of my life, to go with my dad to that game. We have a lot of Canadians on the staff and a lot of hockey fans. A lot of us grew up in the northern U.S. or Canada.”
